Install Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 product key (OEM versions too)

How to install Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 product key? You can’t using the same product key, but there is a way to do it anyway. You must use generic product key during the install, then change it to your Windows 8 key after install.

First of all you are going to need Windows 8.1 install media. You can use official media creation tool from Microsoft. You can read more about it here.

Media creation tool –  Download

  • Use the tool to create your bootable media to USB or DVD. Some users reported errors creating USB media, in that case you can just select to download iso and create bootable usb media with alternative tool.
  • During the install use generic product key, every version have it’s own key.

  • After install right click “This Pc” and select “Properties“. Then one the right bottom of the window click “Change product key“.
  • Enter your original Windows 8 product key, it will automatically check it.

 

That’s it, now you have successfully installed Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 product key.
