How to install good old Skype instead of app? The Microsoft did it again, making things complicated for their consumers.
In 2018 Skype team decided to force their users to use their latest app. They removed all links for previous desktop versions and tells everyone to use Skype in Windows Store. But what if you liked the previous version more? Here we provide few simple steps how to get your good old Skype running again.
Skype (Classic) 7.40.0.151 – Download
Note: You should install it with compatibility settings set to “Previous version of Windows”.
Skype (Desktop) 8.17.0.2 – Download
Note: You should install it with compatibility settings set to “Windows 7” otherwise you will get “Please install Skype from the Microsoft Store for the best experience” error.
If you get the msvcp140.dll error
This means your computer is missing the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015. Here are the direct links:
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 32-bit – Download
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 64-bit – Download
Note: If you are using 64-bit operating system, you going to need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Great to get one back on MS. However the main reason for using old skype is to access the “sounds” menu; this is now visable again but it seems that the choice (in this case CLASSIC Ring will no store. If selected and tested it works fine but when saved it doesn’t and reverts to MODERN on reopening the “sounds” menu. Have not tested the other “sounds” options but I suspect that they will behave in a similar manner. Any solution?
Hi Christopher, the reply is quite long so we sent you an email.
OK – your suggested solution has worked on 3 PCs so far. Have now tried on a 4th and the are simply not there – they should appear between and but nothing there. Have reinstalled Skype ver 7.40.0.151 – still missing. Any suggestions (still using Win 10).
Foe some reason the post has removed some of the text in above – it should read “soundfiles” between “PremiumVideo” and “TransferSaveDir”.
Sorry to be a dunce, but how do you change the compatability settings?
Right click the file and select “Properties”. On the new window look for “Compatibility” tab, open it. Then check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select your version. Click Ok to save.
